ALUMINIUM SMELTER BATH
Mechanism of surplus bath formation
Alumina contains sodium oxide (Na2O) impurity
Na2O reacts with aluminium fluoride (AlF3) in the bath to produce sodium fluoride (NaF) and alumina (Al2O3)
AlF3 additions required to maintain AlF3 content
Production of NaF and addition of AlF3 means that bath (Na3AlF6) is produced
Main reaction: 2Al2O3 + 3C 4Al + 3CO2
Side reactions: 3Na2O + 2AlF3 6NaF + Al2O3
3NaF + AlF3 Na3AlF6
Compound Chemical Formula Content (%)
Cryolite Na3AlF6 (3NaF.AlF3) 88-94
Calcium Fluoride CaF2 4-6

Source: S.J. Lindsay, Bath generation and management, 10th Australasian Aluminium Smelting Technology Conference, 2011
Increasing global surplus of aluminium smelter bath
New smelter requires bath to commence operations
So new smelter creates short term bath demand, but
contributes to long term bath surplus

SIGNIFICANT COST ADVANTAGE OF REPLACING FLUORSPAR WITH SMELTER BATH
ALCORE process produces
same hydrogen fluoride

cost feed material
Aluminium smelter bath is a
good quality material (low

Potential for significant
profit margin
A rare opportunity that is financially, strategically and environmentally attractive
