Outstanding Rare Earth Extractions in Larger-scale Tests
Two few weeks ago we advised that ANSTO tests on sub-samples from a 100kg bulk sample from our Deep Leads deposit showed very high extractions (above 70%) for dysprosium and terbium, the two most crucial heavy rare earth elements. This level of extraction is very unusual under the benign conditions used, which is ambient temperatures and pressures with minimal acid for a short time.
ANSTO has now conducted larger-scale slurry tests on 300g sub-samples. As expected, very high extractions were achieved, quite similar to the results from the earlier tests on smaller samples. Notably, the levels of important impurities, aluminium and iron, were very low in the leached solution.
These results further increase the Company’s confidence that high levels of rare earth extraction can be achieved using an environmentally friendly and cost-effective flow sheet in a commercial operation.
Based on these results, ABx and ANSTO have further optimised the process conditions and ANSTO will now conduct impurity removal tests using progressive additions of ammonium bicarbonate.
The overall program is on schedule, with ANSTO’s production of a MREC sample expected in Q4 2025. Results and samples will be provided to prospective customers, who are keenly anticipating these outcomes.
